Thai durian traders promote export to China (July 9)
China is the largest export destination for Thai durians, and with the growth of e-commerce traders in recent years, Chinese consumers can get Thai fresh durians in a short time, thus promoting Thai durian sales in China. According to Mr. Zhu of Zhangzhou Commercial Fresh Supply Chain Co., Ltd., this year in April, the price of Thai durian export was around 30 CNY (4.62 US$) per 0.5 kg, while in early July the price dropped by 30%-40% to around 18-20 CNY (2.77-3.08 US$) per 0.5 kg, which is much lower than the same time last year.
According to Mr. Zhu, two reasons are causing the lower price: the first one is that 40% of Thai durians are consumed locally, and food tourists who come to the orchards and consume durians constitute a large part of local consumption. But COVID-19 limited such tourism; the second one is that the overall production volume this year grew by around 30% compared to last year. These caused a sudden growth of export volume and then influenced the price in the Chinese market.
