Malaysian ‘Designer Durians’ are carving out niche in China (June 15)
Malaysian Sultan durian variety from Pahang state became the top-selling item of the fruit and vegetable presale at the Chinese second largest shopping festival, JD.com’s 618 festival, shows the great demand for durians in China. According to UN Comtrade, durian became the NO. 1 fruit import of China by value in 2019, and the import value of durian has reached US$ 2.3 billion in 2020.
According to the executive director of MAPC Sdn. Bhd., Malaysia’s largest durian supply company, which exports around 90% of its fruit to China, have set up 7 centers to promote the Musang King variety in China and plan to add 15 more centers this year. With more farmers joining, their supply is expected to expand to at least 50% a year.
