Title: 2023 VAAS-FFTC Workshop: Market Development of Mango and Durian Value Chains
Date: June 14-16, 2023
- Day 1: Symposium with a hybrid mode at SOFRI, Mỹ Tho, Vietnam
- Day 2-3: Field visits to mango, durian and other tropical fruit orchards in Mekong Delta
Tropical fruits are mainly produced in developing counties. They provide income opportunities to smallholder farmers and nutritious food to consumers. Increasing consumer awareness of the health benefits and unique flavors of these fruits, coupled with globalization and improved transportation networks, have contributed to the expansion of tropical fruit markets.
India, China and Thailand are the leading mango producing countries, while Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia are major durian producers. Many other countries in the tropics also contribute to the global mango and durian industries. However, it has been hard for smallholders to produce large and stable amounts of quality products to participate in the rapidly changing markets. The global markets are becoming more centralized and require investments in postharvest handling and cold chain transportation. Meanwhile, the problems of pests and diseases in tropical zones and extreme weathers continue to threaten fruit tree management. Smallholders need to adopt appropriate technologies including new varieties, processing and farm management in time to adjust and diversify products for off season or niche markets.
Food and Fertilizer Technology Center for the Asian and Pacific Region (FFTC), Vietnam Academy of Agriculture Sciences (VAAS), Southern Horticultural Research Institute (SOFRI) in Vietnam, and Taiwan Agricultural Research Institute (TARI) are jointly organizing the 2023 VAAS-FFTC Workshop on “Market Development of Mango and Durian Value Chains.” to address the issues above. The Symposium will be held on June 14-16, including a one-day international symposium at SOFRI (in-person and online, free registration) and a 2-day field trip (by invitation).
We sincerely welcome your participation in person in Vietnam or online. Registration is free at https://km.fftc.org.tw/workshop/22
