Peak period of mangosteen export from south Thailand to China begins earlier than usual (June 28)
Mangosteen is so sensitive to weather changes that its production in China is limited to meet the demand in the market. Thus, the Chinese market relies on imports of mangosteen primarily from Thailand and Indonesia. The production season of Thai mangosteen is from April to December, the peak period of production in east Thailand falls in May and June, while in July and August for the south. And production season in Indonesia is from December to April, complementing the supply season of Thai durians.
According to Mr. Wang Yong of Yunnan Maoyuan Fruit and Vegetable Export Co., Ltd., the peak period of the mangosteen season in south Thailand came early this year in June, and the supply volume started to grow in the middle of June, making the price of Thai mangosteen begin to decline in the Chinese market. The average market price was around 20 CNY (3.10 US$) per 0.5 kg at the end of June.
